    RADICALLY REDESIGNING INTRODUCTORY MIS LARGE-SCALE LECTURES: CREATING ENHANCED LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

    Traditional introductory Management Information Systems (MIS) large-scale lecture course models include a textbook, PowerPoint slides, and electronic files of exam questions utilized for assessing students’ understanding of the topics. Today’s Business professionals are required to think critically and apply explicit and tacit knowledge. The MIS department recognized that this traditional large-scale lecture format was not sustaining student engagement and it was evident that students were not developing these critical business skills when MIS professors were prescribing to the traditional textbook methodologies. The MIS Department revisited the traditional large-scale lecture-based format and created a new classroom curriculum centered on Activity Based Learning and conceptualized an Active Learning Funnel incorporating three dimensions: Technology, Content and Activity which form an Enhanced Learning Environment

    Two distinct forms of Chlamydia psittaci associated with disease and infertility in Phascolarctos cinereus (Koala)

    While several diseases associated with Chlamydia psittaci infection have been reported in Phascolarctos cinereus (koala), it is still unclear whether one or more chlamydial strains are responsible. In this study, we provide evidence, obtained by restriction enzyme and gene probe analysis, that two quite distinct strains of C. psittaci infect koalas; one strain was isolated from the conjunctivae, and the other was isolated from the urogenital tract and the rectum. A gene probe, pFEN207, containing the coding sequence for an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the chlamydial genus-specific lipopolysaccharide antigen, and a separate probe, pCPML-4N, prepared from a DNA fragment of a koala-infecting strain of C. psittaci, were used to determine the patterns of hybridization in the koala-infecting strains; these patterns were found to be quite distinct from those observed with C. psittaci isolates from other animals. We also demonstrated by hybridization analysis with an avian strain plasmid that all three koala urogenital isolates contain a plasmid and that there is no evidence for the presence of a homologous plasmid in any of the ocular isolates

    Studies using Event-Related Potentials have shown the existence of a component called Feedback Error-Related Negativity (fERN). This component has been characterized as a negative deflection which responds differentially to profits and losses in terms of expected and unexpected outcomes. Thus, while some studies have defined the idea of "expected outcome" as the probability to win vs. to lose, others have defined it as the expected size of rewards. How these alternative interpretations of "expected outcome" affect the fERN's research, and the effects of their interaction under a specific model of "expected value" has not been properly assessed. This work contextualizes the general study of neural mechanisms involved in decisionmaking processes, putting the fERN studies in context; besides, it reviews the two main approaches to its research; and finally, it explores the possibilities to further expand the fERN studies, in the context of the transdisciplinary rising field of neuroeconomics

    Altered corticomotor-cerebellar integrity in young ataxia telangiectasia patients

    Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research in identifying altered brain structure and function in ataxia-telangiectasia, an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder, is limited. Diffusion-weighted MRI were obtained from 11 ataxia telangiectasia patients (age range, 7-22 years; mean, 12 years) and 11 typically developing age-matched participants (age range, 8-23 years; mean, 13 years). Gray matter volume alterations in patients were compared with those of healthy controls using voxel-based morphometry, whereas tract-based spatial statistics was employed to elucidate white matter microstructure differences between groups. White matter microstructure was probed using quantitative fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity measures. Reduced gray matter volume in both cerebellar hemispheres and in the precentral-postcentral gyrus in the left cerebral hemisphere was observed in ataxia telangiectasia patients compared with controls (P < 0.05, corrected for multiple comparisons). A significant reduction in fractional anisotropy in the cerebellar hemispheres, anterior/posterior horns of the medulla, cerebral peduncles, and internal capsule white matter, particularly in the left posterior limb of the internal capsule and corona radiata in the left cerebral hemisphere, was observed in patients compared with controls (P< 0.05). Mean diffusivity differences were observed within the left cerebellar hemisphere and the white matter of the superior lobule of the right cerebellar hemisphere (P< 0.05). Cerebellum-localized gray matter changes are seen in young ataxia telangiectasia patients along with white matter tract degeneration projecting from the cerebellum into corticomotor regions. The lack of cortical involvement may reflect early-stage white matter motor pathway degeneration within young patients

    [EN] The upconversion emissions of yttrium orthoaluminate nano-perovskite co-doped with Er3+/Yb3+ have been studied. Strong green and red upconversion emissions, which can be observed by naked eyes, were observed when exciting the sample at 980 nm. In particular, the green band was monitored as a function of temperature and the obtained results suggest that this nano-perovskite can be used as an optical temperature sensor by exciting in the infrared range.     A quasi-synoptic survey of the European continental shelf edge during the SEFOS project

    Quasi-synoptic surveys of the European continental shelf edge have been conducted since the spring of 1994 by participants in the Shelf Edge Fisheries Oceanography Study (SEFOS). The purpose of the surveys is primarily to address questions concerning the eastern boundary current raised by fishery biologists, as the eastern boundary or slope current is intimately involved in the life history of many important European commercial fish species, such as mackerel, horse mackerel, blue whiting and hake. In all 21 sections were defined crossing the shelf edge from Portugal to Norway. The majority of these were occupied by a number of European laboratories between March and June 1994. Sections across the shelf edge have been used to examine the location and characteristics of the current in the different observational regions. Diagrams of t-S have been employed to describe the water masses involved in the slope current. Vertical and horizontal sections along the shelf have been constructed from the different across-shelf sections in order to examine the along-shelf variation of processes such as vertical and horizontal mixing in the area of the current. While preliminary data are presented, data collection continues and final analysis has not yet been completed
